Policy harmful effects to the practice of nursing and delivery of quality patient care
Nursing staffing should not be based upon the concept of one size fits all. Number of patients should not determine the staffing because it will not take into consideration the acuity and the needs based on the diagnosis of the patient. It also doesn't appreciate or empower nurses as they will be no more be involved in making staffing decision based on the needs of the patients. Furthermore, this policy is harmful to nursing as doesn't look into “the unit layout and ancillary support in determining the appropriate number, skills, experience, specialized training and education of nurses on a given unit” (Safe Nurse Staffing, 2009).
